Elder Futhark Rune Set

This is one of our favorite divination tools, as well as one of our best selling products...

As such, we'd like to humbly thank Peter for all his hard work in writing the definitions we have used on these pages.  One must give credit where it is due.  All of the definitions were written by him, and they are amazing.  His insight into the runes is incredible, and we could not have posted this without his help.  Once again, thank you, Peter.

The current members of Serenity are working on our own definitions so as to reflect our own work, but that project will not be complete until spring 2011.  Thank you to Peter for allowing us to use his in the mean-time.

Runes were used by people in many parts of the world as early as the 1st Century A.D. It is an ancient alphabet, which was sacred to the Germanic peoples of Northern Europe. You may have seen these various alphabets in many different movies, television shows, album covers, and other media.

Each rune has a phonetic sound as well as a certain stone, flower, and tree associated with it. Runes are used for Divination, Candle Magick, Amulets and other magickal uses. If you think about it, Runes are like Tarot. You have the regular meaning and most also have a reversed (also known as "merkstave") meaning. "Merkstave" literally translates to "dark stick." Although when a rune is drawn reversed, it may not have an opposite meaning, but more of a "darker" meaning or a more negative connotation.

Runes can be made from many different materials, such as wood, glass, stone, and clay. All of the runes sold by Star of Serenity are hand-crafted and come with directions on how to create different spreads as well as definitions for each rune. We have many varieties on our site to purchase, such as clay, oak, pine, glass, and a rune "dice" set. Although our focus is on the Runic Symbols of Elder Futhark, this is only one variation and the most commonly used. There are also the Younger Futhark, Norwegian, Icelandic Runes, Anglo-Saxon, Modern, and the Germanic rune sets as well. We can make any set you wish to have created for you. All are available in a variety of colors and materials as requested and are hand-crafted by the Circle of the Star of Serenity. For more information, please check out our online store.

Each set comes with twenty-five runes, arranged in 3 groups of eight called aetts (or the plural form aettir), plus one blank rune. The 3 aettir are named after the Norse gods Freyr, Hagal, and Tyr.

The blank rune is highly controversial because some say it is an extra, to be used in case you misplace one; while others believe it to be Odin's rune and represents the unknowable. You may or may not choose to use it in your divination.

Because Odin's Rune, or the Blank Rune, does not fall under any particular aett, we will list its meaning here, in case you choose to use it.

Odin's Rune

Meaning -- Odin's Rune is "the unknowable."  There are different schools of thought on this rune. Some consider it a blank tile, others consider it as the "unknowable." When giving readings for other people, you may offer them to remove this tile from the pouch. If it is included and drawn, regardless of what the rest of the reading is, it usually means "that is not for you to know right now."
