I've always wanted to learn tarot. I desperately want it to be my "thang," but somehow, it just never has been. Although I have made valiant efforts at learning to read the cards without the book... it just never seems to work for me. I mean, the CARDS work, but my BRAIN doesn't. I just can't seem to remember all those cards!! And then the reversed meanings too! I give much credit to those who CAN and DO. On the few occasions that I've totally connected with the cards, my readings have been amazing. They've been incredibly intuitive and accurate. I loved those readings. Mostly, I still need to refer to my book, and my readings are "okay," but no more than that. Alas, it appears that my talents for divination still lie in scrying. I've tried a couple of decks over time, and my favorite is The Halloween Tarot by Kipling West. For those of you who know me, Halloween is my favorite of all. This deck clicks with me more than any other, and I enjoy it immensely. Once a little over a year ago, I took a workshop on "How To Make Your Own Tarot," thinking that this might be REALLY cool for me. Maybe it would help me to learn to read the deck (without aid of my book)! The girl who was teaching the class had created her own tarot deck out of characters and episodes from Star Trek, the Next Generation. It was an interesting class. She was so connected with her cards and knew them all back and forth and up and down. She related to her cards SO well because she loved Star Trek. Jealous of this girl's ability with the cards, and more than a little overzealous, I decided I could create my own tarot. After all, if I've assigned my own associations, they will certainly make more sense to me than "the cold icy mountains of abstract principles of mathematics, which govern all earthly phenomenon" as explained in The Fool. Sorry, guys and gals... I have NOT a clue what icy mountains have to do with abstract principles of mathematics. First things first -- "mathematics" are concrete concepts -- not abstract. No matter how hard you try, one plus one ALWAYS equals two. A right angle is ALWAYS 90 degrees. You get the point. Second, what the heck does ice and snowy mountains have to do with mathematics in the first place?? So I made a deck that made sense to me. It isn't pretty, but they are my associations based on my past experiences and beliefs. Another ongoing undertaking for me is to create one of my own using antique Halloween postcards, which I adore. Also in the works for me is to create a photographic set of cards. This should prove interesting; if you know me, you know my love of photography. That part will require help from my younger daughter, Efthalia; she is my primary model and frequent subject of my photos. Together, we can do this. So, the other day, I'm at work and just thinking... and I suddenly suggested that Evangaline, my older daughter, who is an incredible artist, might be able to draw the pictures, and we could collaborate to create our own regular tarot deck! How cool would THAT be?! She agreed to undertake this task, and I think that it will turn out to be a wonderful, and yet major project. As we go along, I am creating my own definitions of each of the Rider-Waite cards and then interpreting them as I see them. See bibliography below. This information I pass along to Evangaline, and she is creating the drawings for each. But with our own ideas and twists. At the very least, this gives me an opportunity to focus and interpret each card. As I do this, I am hoping it will help me learn each card as I go along. Works out in a few ways for me. The in-depth research as well as the writing and editing process will help me familiarize myself with the cards. So, begins our journey, much like The Fool. If you are interested in seeing the project, please feel free to click on the links. If you are an adept tarot reader and have any edits or changes, feel free to email me at megwynne@starofserenity.com. I welcome all suggestions. We will post some preliminary pictures of each card to go along with my definitions as Evangaline draws them. Check back to see our progress! Bright blessings!
